Can I Take the Jeep Gladiator Willys Off-Roading?

Absolutely! The Jeep Gladiator Willys offers an array of equipment geared toward the land far beyond where the pavement ends. For example, the Willys trim features Jeep’s Trac-Loc limited-slip rear differential. This offers the ability to limit the wheel spin of a single rear wheel during a loss of traction while increasing the power sent to the wheels that have traction. This helps you stay in control and headed in the right direction. Additionally, the Gladiator Willys uses the same shock absorbers as the Rubicon trim, which we’ll give more details on in the next section, offering excellent suspension travel. It also comes with cab rock rails to protect the outer edges of the undercarriage. Keeping traction with the trail surface are the Willys’ knobby 33-inch off-roading tires. Even the cabin is ready for off-roading with all-weather rubber floor mats. The Willys trim is instantly recognizable with its Gloss Black grille and matching 17-inch alloy wheels. Meanwhile, it stands out with ‘Willys’ hood decals in a military stencil font and the trim level’s iconic ‘4-Wheel Drive’ logo on the rear swing gate.

The Legendary Rubicon

Next in the Gladiator’s off-roading lineup is the Rubicon trim. Like Willys, the Rubicon trim is carried over from the Wrangler lineup, named after California’s fearsome Rubicon Trail. The Gladiator Rubicon’s off-road capability begins with the Rock-Trac part-time 4×4 system, which offers a 4:1 transfer case gear ratio. This means the axles spin once for every four rotations of the transmission output shaft, providing higher levels of torque at low speeds for better off-road crawling control. Meanwhile, locking front and rear differentials allow you to set the wheels to move at the same speed to carry momentum up steep terrain. Further, the Gladiator Rubicon is equipped with electronic sway bar disconnect. With this, you can unlink the front stabilizer bar at the push of a button, allowing the front wheels to rise and drop further, increasing wheel articulation to easily pass over extreme terrain. The Rubicon’s Dana 44 heavy-duty front and rear axles increase its durability and capability, which is further increased by the full-float rear axle. Other notable off-roading features include red Monroe 2.0-inch shock absorbers offering 11.1 inches of ground clearance, high-clearance fender flares, 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac all-terrain tires, cab rock rails, and more. Introduced in 2024 and carried into the 2025 model year is the Rubicon X, which adds a forward-facing off-road camera, Rock-Trac full-time 4×4, 35-inch BFGoodrich T/A KO2 all-terrain tires, steel front and rear bumpers, and an available 8,000-pound Warn winch. The Rubicon X also adds more cabin comfort with 12-way power-adjustable front seats, built-in navigation, Alpine premium audio with a wireless speaker, heated front seats, a three-piece body-color hard top, and more.

What Sets the Gladiator Mojave Apart?

The Mojave trim is exclusive to the Gladiator lineup and the only Jeep model to wear the Desert Rated 4×4 badge, whereas all other Gladiator trims feature a Trail Rated 4×4 badge. The Gladiator Mojave’s Desert Rated badge is earned by adding off-roading content geared toward tearing up desert dunes. The suspension, for example, is upgraded with FOX 2.5-inch internal bypass shocks with remote reservoirs, offering a ground clearance of 11.6 inches. It also features FOX front hydraulic jounce bumpers to prevent bottoming out when the shocks reach full compression. The Mojave trim also features a locking rear differential for optimal traction, along with Dana 44 heavy-duty axles in the front and rear. To maintain traction on loose sand, the Gladiator Mojave sports 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac all-terrain tires. Noting its high-performance nature is the Mojave’s performance hood with a functional hood scoop. This nature is also noted by the performance seat bolsters. Finally, like the Rubicon, the Mojave features the Off-Road+ button which intelligently makes adjustments to provide the best traction on the current road surface. However, the Mojave features a high-speed mode for the rear locker, which provides optimal traction while traversing sand at high speeds. The Mojave X is also available, adding the same interior and exterior features as the aforementioned Rubicon X.
